When I write an essay, I learned a long time ago to break up my essay into parts. The normal essay should have an introduction, at least 3 body paragraphs, and a conclusion. But when you are not used to this, even writing the introduction can seem like an impossible task. That is where the SOAP method comes into play. This is an extremely helpful tool to anyone needing to write an essay. What the SOAP method does, is break down your essay so that you can figure out what your thesis is, because every essay needs a thesis. Once you have your thesis, the essay can be formed easily.
Think about the subject you are writing about. For example, let's pretend I was writing about the benefits of ballroom dancing. My subject would be the benefits of ballroom dancing.
What is the occasion that you will be writing about? Why are you writing the essay in the first place? If I use my last example, I would say that the occasion of my essay is to inform readers the health benefits of ballroom dancing.
Who are you writing your essay to? Who do you want to read it? This plays a big part of your essay because if you don't know who you're writing to, it will be pretty hard to come up with what to write. In my example, my audience is anyone who is wondering how to lose weight, and also anyone who is interested in ballroom dancing. When you know who you are writing to, you can figure out what kind of tone to take with the essay.
What is the purpose of your essay? Are you trying to persuade someone, simply inform someone, or describing something? If you don't know the purpose of your essay, you can easily get confused and lost. In my example, I am trying to persuade readers to use dancing to lose weight. That is my purpose.
Once you have these 5 things filled out, you have effectively figured out your thesis. With your thesis, you can start writing your essay. In my example, using this, I could do my introduction, and in the three body paragraphs I could explain three benefits of ballroom dancing and then write my conclusion. Pretty simple, right?

Become a Technical Writing Specialist

You don't need a four year college degree to become a successful technical writer. But there is something you could do to multiply your chances of getting hired as a technical writer.
Before I reveal to you this strategy I have to caution you. This is purely a marketing strategy. If you're new to the field of technical writing, then you may not use it. It specifically applies to those who have some technical writing experience.
The Strategy
You could market yourself as a specialist technical writer. This may give you an edge over generalist technical writers. For example, let's say that you're a technical writer with 3 years of experience in the oil and gas industry. And you want to get a job as a mid level technical writer. But you want to stick to the oil and gas industry. Instead of marketing yourself as a technical writer you can call yourself an oil and gas technical writer.
The key is to market yourself as a specialist. If you market yourself successfully, chances are that you will be given preference over senior level technical writers who have decades of experience. They are generalist technical writers. You, on the other hand, are a specialist within your industry.
Think about it. If you were the owner of a software company and you were looking for a technical writer to write your software documentation, would you hire a generic tech writer with ten years of experience or a specialist software technical writer with four years of experience?
It's like comparing doctors who are general practitioners and those who are specialists. The specialists make much more money than general practitioners. But remember - even specialist doctors have to go through basic medical school and then choose their specialty. So to become a specialist technical writer you have to first go through basic technical writing training. In other words you must first be a generalist and then become a specialist.
You should only use this strategy if you want to stick to one industry. However, if you want exposure to different industries then you should not market yourself as a specialist. Secondly, depending on your location, you may not have much of a choice. Certain cities are heavily dependent on one industry. For example, if you live in Detroit, you may only get the opportunity to work for the automotive industry.
On the other hand, if you live in Houston, you have the oil and gas industry, the aviation and the bio medical field. You could specialize in one of these industries.
How to market yourself as a specialist technical writer
For starters include that in your resume', your cover letter and all your marketing materials. Introduce yourself as a technical writer specializing in a specific industry. When you speak to recruiters tell them that you are a software technical writer or an oil and gas technical writer or a biomedical technical writer. If a job opens up within your chosen industry then recruiters will immediately think of you.
In the beginning of this essay I said that you should only use this strategy if you have some experience as a technical writer. There is an exception to this. If you have experience working within a certain industry and want to become a technical writer specializing in that industry then you could market yourself as a technical writing specialist.
For example, let's say that you've worked in the health care industry as a nurse. And you want to become a technical writer in the health care industry. You could market yourself as a health care technical writer and specialize in the health care industry.
The choice is yours. You could market yourself as a specialist technical writer. But no matter what you do, you need to know the basics of technical writing. It's the foundation upon which your technical writing career will be built.
If you can write a simple sentence and organize your thoughts then technical writing may be a rewarding field. You can easily make it a second income stream in your spare time.
According to the U.S. Department of Labor, the average salary for technical writers is $60,380. Freelance technical writers can make from $30 to $70 per hour.

How They Grade Bar Exam Essays

You will spend close to two months, take dozens of practice essays, and spend a good two or three days in the bar exam. That's a lot of time to put into the exam, and how much time do you think the graders will invest into reading your essays? About three to five minutes per essay, at most.
At least once before the exam, it's a good idea to try the exercise of putting yourself in the shoes of the person who will be holding your fate:
1) Set the timer to five minutes

3) Read an actual essay exam answer
4) Come back when you're done
See, it doesn't actually take that long to read an answer. Keep in mind, the exam answer you just read is a 'model passing' answer, and believe me when I say this, it is an amazingly well-written answer! You don't need to be even close to writing like this to pass. But, hopefully you will see how CRUCIALLY IMPORTANT it is your essays are structured, organized, readable, and use headings (that topic is for a different post, coming soon). For a grader to get through your essay in this short amount of time, it will need to be very readable.
Now, if you really want to feel like a bar exam grader, repeat the exercise dozens of times at 10:00pm. You will be in a very similar situation to what the grader has to do, after spending a full day at work, coming home to his family, and is now trying to meet his deadline of reading 100 bar exam essays this week. He doesn't have a lot of time and needs to be very efficient and methodical in his reading. The easier you make it on him, the better.
Process of Bar Exam Grading
Here is a rough review of the process the graders go through when grading your exam.
Bar exam graders are attorneys who have passed the bar and sign-up to be a grader. They get paid a stipend (which is likely far less than what they make at their jobs).
After the bar exam is taken, a group of graders get together and take the same essay you just took. They write out a full essay, including all the rules and analysis. Then the graders meet together, look at what each of them wrote down, and create a 'model' answer.
Next, the graders get together with the student answers, and they'll each grade the same student answer, giving their opinion of what the answer should receive. They will then compare their opinions, discuss reasons why, and after several run-throughs, give a breakdown of how many points each issue is worth and a score of what they think that exam answer would deserve.
Then, they grade a second essay, running it through the same process and grading model they had created for the first essay, recalibrating any necessary point adjustments. Eventually they find a model answer and grading system that all the graders can use. Although, grading may seem subjective for each grader, believe it or not, if fifteen graders grade the same exam using this calibrated point system, each grader will typically fall within five points of each other. This is to ensure fairness, equality, and eliminate personal subjectivity amongst anyone grading the exams. Any grader who's scores are consistently more than five points off from all the other graders is typically removed.
In California, if your total score for the performance test, essays, and MBE is greater than 1440 you pass! If your score is below a 1390, you don't pass. If it falls between these two numbers, your exam is regraded by a different set of graders. Hopefully, it is given more points as you still will need to hit the 1440 mark to pass.

College admissions officers consistently rank the personal essay as one of the most important factors in their decision to admit or reject students. Tips on Writing Personal Narrative Essay Examples

Everyone has heard the saying "Write what you know."Personal narrative essays allow you to take this advice to the extreme, since the point of one of these essays is to write about your own experience. That doesn't mean that you have to have something earth-shattering or epic to write about; however, it also doesn't mean that you should create a work of fiction loosely based on a story from your life. It doesn't have to be that hard or that complicated.The truth is, any essay about your everyday life or your ordinary past can be a great personal narrative essay, if you write it well.
In order to write a great personal narrative essay or college essay, especially if you are writing one for the first time, remember that writing it is a learning experience. You will need to do things differently, and think about things differently, while writing this kind of essay.
First -- and most obvious -- is the fact that you can use personal pronouns, such as "I," "me," "we," etc. Although these pronouns are not supposed to be used most formal essays, it is expected that you will use them to recount your own experience. Do not try to keep your language or pronoun use overly formal when you are writing a personal narrative, because if you do, the entire thing will sound stilted and weird. Use natural language, but keep it polished by staying away from slang or jargon. As you write the essay, imagine that you are telling your story to your grandmother, and that she has never heard it before. Your language should sound natural and normal, and anyone should be able to understand what you're saying.
In that same vein, remember that anyone should be able to read your essay and have it make sense. Do not assume that the reader already knows about you, in any way. Assume that the reader knows nothing about you or about the story you want to tell. If you really grasp this idea, you will see the importance of including detail in your writing. In a personal narrative essay, details are especially important. They make the difference between a simple list of events, and a personal story. So, whatever event or experience you are relating in the essay, do not leave it in bland, choppy sentences, like "I woke up. I got dressed. I went to school. I went to class." Details tell the reader who you are, and they make the essay easier to read. Don't just say that you woke up; instead, tell the reader how you were feeling when the alarm went off, and that you hit the snooze button a few times. Every bit of detail that you add to your essay creates depth and interest. Your inner world of thoughts and feelings is just as important to the essay as the actual events that took place, so make sure that you don't leave it out.
Now, a word of caution is necessary. Sometimes, when given the suggestion to include details and to describe everything carefully, some writers will go overboard. For example, student writers may include excessively long lists of adjectives in their descriptions of minor things, they may try to use analogies or comparisons that are grandiose or inappropriate, or they may use large vocabulary words incorrectly. The problem is that these excesses get in the way of a reader who is trying to understand your essay or follow your story. If they come across a big word that you have used just for the sake of using a big word, what will stick in the reader's mind is your error, not the story you were trying to tell. So, when you write a personal narrative essay, don't go to a special effort to use bigger words, include more adjectives, or use artful metaphors. Only include those details that actually shed light on the idea you are trying to express, or the personal story that you are trying to tell.
If you find yourself stuck, and you don't know what to write about or how to decide which details to include in your narrative, remember that any essay must have a main idea, or a theme. In a personal narrative essay, you might write about an experience that taught you something, an experience that opened your eyes to something new, or a particularly memorable time or event.Even if you are given an essay prompt, take that topic and find something relating to it that is important to you.Then, tell the story of your experience, and try to explain to the reader why that particular thing is important, and why it matters to you.There are a variety of ways that a personal experience could be important, and they don't have to be historic or big. If you care about something because it was surprising, sad, instructive or short-lived, that is enough. One of the great things about writing a personal narrative essay is the fact that you -- and the things that are important to you -- are enough.
So,when you are faced with the task of writing a personal narrative essay example, don't panic. Don't stare at the blank page and worry about how much of it you have to fill. Once you have found something that you care about enough to write about it, the blank space will fill itself.
